Data Maintenace Department

The primary responsibilities of the Data Maintenance Department are ordering, cataloging, and processing new and gift books so they can be placed on the shelves for our patrons to check-out. We handle all books, fiction and non-fiction, for our library and the three branch libraries. We place orders for books that are selected by our Collection Development staff, and we receive and pay for those books when they are shipped to us.

In cataloging, books are assigned a Dewey Decimal Classification number and subject headings. The Dewey number allows patrons to locate books in our collection. A record is created in our catalog based on this information and other information describing each book. This record allows patrons to search for books in our catalog. After cataloging, each book is processed, including labels, pockets, jackets, etc.
Data Maintenance is also in charge of maintaining the materials budgets for our library and the branches. We keep them up-to-date on how much money they have and when that money needs to be spent. Data Maintenance is located upstairs beside the elevator. Any of us, Sandra B., Judy, and Zina, will be glad to show you around.
